For years now I've collected video game music. At first it was an idle habit of mine, but as I started to collect more I began to realize how incredible the music was (and still is). Many times you'll find a catchy tune from a game will in fact be a full song in much better quality, will have had a cover made in an entirely new style, or will have parts sampled to make entirely new music.

But, of course, the only way to realize this or to see if the style of music matches your taste is to listen to it yourself. For this reason I am presenting not really my 5 video game songs (although they are up there), but 5 great songs to check out if you're interested in giving video game music a try.

The Decisive Battle (by The Black Mages) from Final Fantasy VI
No top 5 video game music selection would be complete without something from the Final Fantasy series. Almost all the music in the series is composed by world renown composer Nobuo Uematsu. This particular song is an instrumental rock cover one of his battle songs.

Unforgotten from Halo 3
An instrumental piece straight from Halo 3, this track is nothing short of beautiful. If you haven't played Halo before, or if you're not even interested in trying it, this is still a highly recommended listen.

Time's Scar from Chrono Cross
From a game I have never played, the album this comes from is possibly my favourite as far as instrumental music goes. The song starts off slow and beautiful and gains pace halfway.

Tetris (New Melody Mix) from Tetris
To be truthful, this tune is actually from a Russian folk song (called Korobeiniki) that dates back to the 19th century; however these days it's so closely related to Tetris that most people associate it with it. This particular version is actually from OverClocked Remix, a community that's based around arranging/remixing video game music.

Decide in the Eyes (X Guitar Arrange Version) from F-Zero
It's tough to single out a single song from this album. This album takes racing music and charges it even more by putting it to an electric guitar, and if you've ever played the game this music brings back all sorts of nostalgia.

I'm sure not everyone agrees with my tastes and I'm sure others have some other great tracks they would want to mention. As long as you like instrumental music however, it's pretty much guaranteed you can find something to your taste.
